    In defense of the …
    In defense of the one-dimensional portrayal of the military in this particular movie, it IS suggested (albeit obliquely) that the soldiers on Pandora are mercenaries, a sort of 22nd-Century ragtag, the sort of people the theoretical 22nd Century military would probably want to send to the arse end of nowhere.

    That said, it’s still a way of shoehorning in an Evil Military, but there you go.

    You clearly didn’t …
    You clearly didn’t understand what i said.. The visual effects were the focal point of the film as opposed to what most films would use, the story line. Just because the story line has been vaugely used before, doesn’t make it a bad film.

    If anything you would need a more basic story line to fully appreciate the stunning CGI’s.

  9. MikeRyu Says:

    Yeah I agree, …
    Yeah I agree, that’s what I said. The main characters were better developed. MNU were pantomime villains though.

    i LOVE …
    i LOVE RedLetterMedia and all of his OTHER reviews. I thought He was waaaaaay off with this one. Avatar was far from a bad movie. It was a familiar story line, yes, but with a lot of imaginative elements. I took no offense to the CGI because it was innovative and didn’t distract me (didn’t watch in 3D mind you). the acting was superb I don’t care what anyone says on that issue. Overrall, it’s not a movie to end all movies, but it was a good film nonetheless and certainly was entertaining.

    thats the point… …
    thats the point…is that even though they had a similar political message the chars of district 9 were way more developed

    I would like to …
    I would like to punch everyone in the face that use “Pocahontas” and “Avatar” in the same sentence. James cameron wrote the Avatar script with integrity and self dignity. Just because it is the largest grossing movie ever made, doesn’t mean you all have to be douchebags.

    To be fair District …
    To be fair District 9 is also about an evil corporation and they are far more stereotypically evil than the one in Avatar. In Avatar they at least considered a peaceful option. In District 9 they were beyond amoral, they were actually sadistic. However Wikus, Christopher and his kid were very well developed.

    It’s a …

    @Terminal83
    It’s a familiar story line, I’ll give you that. Ok, how about logistics: 8 academy award nominations, the highest grossing film of all time (w/o inflation adjustment), and overwhelming critical accolades (83% RT Meter). Lame my ass. I’m not even arguing it’s a great movie, it wasn’t even in my top 3 this year. I get when people call it lame. By the way, aren’t subjective/unwinnable arguments fun? :)

  23. Terminal83 Says:

    @sccitylhh

    Yes …
    @sccitylhh

    Yes the story is there, but it’s still fundamentally brain dead. If you’ve seen Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, and Last Samurai you’ve seen this swill. I notice you argued about the effects but not anything else really. Pretty much an indicator of what tools this movie has bred. The movie is a glorified theme park ride. All that’s missing from it is the “You must be this tall to ride” sign.

  24. sccitylhh Says:

    @Terminal83
    Here’s …

    @Terminal83
    Here’s an argument for you: cinema at its roots at the turn of the 20th century was subject to a phenomenon known as the “cinema of attractions.” Look it up. It drew huge audiences for its ability to show people things they had never seen before. Avatar is a modern example. It used revolutionary performance capture/live action blending techniques to provide a virtual environment unknown to film. Movies are meant to dazzle. The story is NOT brain dead, look at it. It’s there.

  25. Terminal83 Says:

    @sccitylhh

    @sccitylhh

    Actually Avatar DOES deserve it. It’s a brain dead story with flashy effects meant to distract audiences. And I’m convinced you’re using the term “high horse” the wrong way. Come back when you have a better argument.
