Avatars

I want to make an icon/avatar or whatever they’re called and as you can probably tell I’m not very technical.
I want somewhere that I can upload a picture, add some text and then use it online.
Can anyone suggest any sites where I can do this?

   It really depends how in depth you want to get with it. There are lots of free photo edting sites where you can make stuff at… on the web, but its pretty limited. Compared to downloading a program and making it that way.

   If you’re interested in downloading a program where you can make all sorts of graphics (and edit photos).. then there is GIMP–which is free… I never could figure out how to use it though. The interface is pretty difficult to understand. There is Photoshop–which has a free trial of it for 30 days. It’s what the pro’s use, but it takes up a lot of memory and it’s pretty difficult to get used to using. There is also Paint Shop Pro… which I use. It’s pretty easy to learn once you get past the initial learning curve.

   Photoshop has more tutorials for it on the net… GIMP is popular because it’s free. They all have pro’s and con’s really.
